Sadx dreamcast models mod. MAC Cosmetics has been a mainstay of the makeup world for decades now, and its products are both iconic and sometimes controversial. After MAC battled claims that they are not entirely cruelty-free, some customers began to turn from their long-loved shades to find new options. Not to mention, a single MAC lipstick will set you back $18.50, which could be used to buy two whole pizzas (or other delicious equivalent)!
MAC Soft Ochre is a permanent eyeshadow that retails for $18.50 and contains 0.17 oz. Jump to a particular section if you know what information you're looking for!
Apr 01, 2016 MAC Cosmetics is well known makeup brand in the United States. Their best sellers are their lipsticks, eye shadows, and paint pots (cream eye shadows that people tend to use as eye shadow bases). Soft Ochre, one of the more famous paint pots, can be found in almost every makeup tutorial on YouTube. People love this paint pot because it keeps. Dec 10, 2010 MAC Soft Ochre Paint Pot: “ A highly pigmented eye colour that goes on creamy, but dries to an intense vibrant finish. Long-wearing, colour-fast. Creates seamless coverage without weight or caking. Blends smoothly over the lids. Cream-based, can be mixed with MAC shadows and liners. Here are our dupes for MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot, which is an eyeshadow that retails for $18.50 and contains 0.17 oz. ($108.82 per ounce). Another thing I will say is if you have more of a yellow undertone to your skin the Maybelline Colour Tattoo in Creme De Nude looked like it would be a great dupe for the MAC Paint Pot in Soft Ochre, I don't have the Colour Tattoo but I do have the Paint Pot and after seeing the Colour Tattoo in Boots, they look almost identical to me.
Considering all this, I’ve put together a list of the best MAC dupes around. (All recommendations are confirmed cruelty-free unless otherwise stated.)
For your base:
MAC Foundation Dupes:
We’re starting with MAC’s most-loved base product: The Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 ($30) provides an airbrushed matte finish and has notably high coverage.
A great dupe for Studio Fix Fluid is the Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation ($7.99), which is just as long-lasting and shine-free for a fraction of the price. L’Oreal’s True Match Foundation ($7.59) is another great option if you’re looking for that flawless base.
(Please note that neither Maybelline nor L’Oreal are entirely cruelty-free. Cruelty-free companies include NYX and Milani — see our list of the best NYX products for more on this brand.)
MAC Concealer Dupes:
Makeup artists and average folk alike have raved about MAC’s Pro Longwear Concealer ($24) for years, but there are cheaper options on the market. I’d recommend the NYX HD Concealer ($4.99) or the Sonia Kashuk All Covered Up Concealer ($9.98) for a similar finish and amount of coverage. Incredimail 2.5.
MAC Blush Dupes:
MAC’s Soft & Gentle Mineralize Skinfinish ($34) gives a lit-from-within glow to the face, but you can get the same luminous look from the Wet ‘n’ Wild To Reflect Shimmer Palettes ($5.99) or the ELF Baked Blush in Pinktastic ($4), which is my favorite cheap highlighter — it gives such a pretty sheen!
MAC Setting Spray Dupes:
Back in the early days of Youtube beauty gurus, everyone was dousing their face with a generous spray of MAC Fix+ ($26), but now other brands have released their own setting sprays that lock in your makeup just as well. My personal favorites are the ELF Mist & Set ($3.99), which contains green tea and other beneficial ingredients, and the NYX Dewy Setting Spray ($8.50) for the perfect dewy look.
For your eyes:
MAC Paint Pot Dupes:
For eye makeup products, MAC is well-known for their Paint Pots ($24), especially the shades Painterly and Soft Ochre, which prime the lids for intense colors, but if you’re not looking to drop $24 on an eyeshadow base, NYX Eyeshadow Base ($7) will prep your lids in the same way. You could also just use concealer on your lids and dust it over with some translucent setting powder for a similar effect.
For your lips:
MAC Lipstick Dupes:

And now, the most iconic MAC product of them all — lipstick. MAC has released so many shades that I’m just going to dupe some of the most popular ones here.
Now it wouldn’t be a MAC post if we didn’t mention Ruby Woo ($18.50). This matte blue-red has dominated the red lipstick market for years, but its formula errs on the drying side.
If you want a more moisturizing formula and a cheaper price tag, I’d recommend NYX Full Throttle Lipstick in Up the Bass ($3.49), which has a unique bullet for precise application. A long-wearing liquid lipstick option would be Colourpop’s Ultra Matte Lip in Creeper ($6.50), which is slightly warmer than Ruby Woo but just as beautiful.
MAC’s Marrakesh ($18.50) is another of their bestsellers. It’s a unique deep orange-brown that is currently out of stock, but never fear! Colourpop’s Lux Lipstick in Gallop ($7) is a very similar shade and has a nice creamy formula.
I’d say Velvet Teddy ($18.50) is as iconic in the MAC line as Ruby Woo is, and for good reason! It’s a beige nude that complements every skin tone, but luckily for you, Wet ‘n’ Wild also has a wildly popular nude lipstick, Bare It All ($4.28), for a much lower price. I’ll guarantee this will become one of your most-used lipsticks in no time!

Mac Paint Pot Soft Ochre
So I finally got my hands on two of the three new matte Color Tattoos from Maybelline in their Gilded in Gold Holiday 2013 Collection: Just Beige and Nude Pink. I have to be honest, as a total MAC junkie and not a huge fan of the shimmery formula of the previous Color Tattoos, I am SUPER impressed with these new matte versions which ended up being very close dupes to the Paint Pots. Because I go through my Paint Pots so often and buy them every couple of months (I use them as my under eyeshadow primers everyday), I know I’m going to have to stock up on these Color Tattoos now because unfortunately they are limited edition and who knows whether or not Maybelline will re-release them again down the road. I don’t want to take the chance and wait! They are THAT good!
Maybelline Color Tattoos in Just Beige and Nude Pink vs. MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots in Soft Ochre and Painterly
First item of business: Color payoff. These two Color Tattoos have it! In fact, dare I say they are actually more opaque and less streaky when applied compared to my Paint Pots? True, Nude Pink is a tad darker and cooler than Painterly, however I feel that once applied to your eyelid, the difference is not noticeable at all. And Just Beige is soooooo close to Soft Ochre, maybe just a little on the warmer side whereas Soft Ochre is cooler.
Talk about creamy! They glide on so smooth which is another reason I am loving these at the moment. I’ve had issues with previous shimmery Color Tattoos coming off clumpy or streaky on my lids. Even though you can’t beat their lasting power, I still hate when the application is too messy and there are chunks of product that won’t blend in as easily. Rest assured you will not have this problem with the matte formula. And one swipe seems to cover all of my lids too- something that requires a few swipes of my Paint Pots to achieve.
Here are side-by-side comparisons of MAC’s Paint Pots and the new Maybelline Color Tattoos:
MAC’s Painterly compared to Maybelline’s Nude Pink
MAC’s Soft Ochre compared to Maybelline’s Just Beige
And so you can see how they compare when swatched on my skin in direct sunlight:
MAC’s Painterly (left) vs. Maybelline’s Nude Pink (right)
MAC’s Soft Ochre (left) vs. Maybelline’s Just Beige (right)
Now let’s talk lasting power. I have been using the new Color Tattoos all week and I have not noticed any creasing with my eyeshadows throughout the day and I have oily skin and eyelids so that’s always a concern of mine. Every once in a while I will get creasing with my Paint Pots but it’s an issue easily corrected by applying an eyelid primer under the Paint Pot. Yes, I know… basically I am using TWO primers but hey, it works when I need it to. I like to think of my Paint Pots as not just primers though. They have worked as correctors for me to even out my skin tone on my eyelids and hid any redness or veins that I have there. But now I’ve actually found that the new Color Tattoos are even better at covering and priming my eyelids than the Paint Pots. MAC’s Paint Pots seem to have a tad drier of a formula compared to Maybelline’s Color Tattoos so maybe that’s why I can swipe once and coat my entire lid without streaks or a second coat.
Mac Paint Pot Black
Finally, price: For $4.99, Maybelline’s Color Tattoos give you .14oz (4g) of product compared to MAC’s Paint Pots with .17oz (5g) at $20.00. If you love Painterly or Soft Ochre, it’s a no-brainer to try Nude Pink or Just Beige, especially when the drugstores have coupons or offer Buy 1, Get 1 50% Off which happens every other week! So stock up while you can and let’s hope Maybelline continues to add more matte Color Tattoos to their permanent line!
